Donors Choose:
Studying genetics through fruit flies

October 26, 2009

Mr. Gentry wanted to provide his students with a hands-onapproach to studying genetics. The only problem is that he needed fruit flies, also known as drosophilia.

Mr. Gentry turned to Donors Choose for the funding he needed to make science real and exciting for his students.

The supplies of the fruit fly culture sets and fruit fly mutants help give his students the tools to engage in science. This will be a semester long project that involves caring for, breeding, and recording the results of the breeding of these mutant insects. The students will use a fruit fly culture, handling materials, and mutant fruit flies to experiment with genetics and how organisms inherit traits and in what patterns.
