Sketching geometry electronically
February 06, 2010
Ms. Bridges turned to Donors Choose to obtain software to help her students in learning geometry
"Without software, we use pencil and paper every day," said Ms. Bridges. "Students learn more when they want to be engaged in the learning process, and using geometry software draws students in to the process of constructive learning!
Geometer's Sketchpad is an affordable software program that allows students to manipulate elements (segments, rays, points, polygons) in two and three dimensions. Because the students feel like they are "just playing around," they begin to explore the elements in a constructive way. This type of learning connects what students already know to the new concepts, and helps kids to develop the abstract thinking that will make them successful in college.
The 12 copies of the software program will allow students to work in pairs, share ideas, and work out proofs to foundational ideas.
