The Curtain Rises on More Good News:
Fountain Square Academy Teacher Nancy Ewing Secures an $800 Target Field Trip Grant
March 28, 2009
High school English and speech teacher Nancy Ewing spearheaded efforts that resulted in an $800 Target Field Trip grant to Fountain Square Academy.
The grant allows Ms. Ewing to take 63 students to the Indiana Repertory Theatre. juniors and seniors went to see “To Kill a Mockingbird” in March and, in April, freshmen and sophomores will see “Crowns,” based upon the best-selling novel that shares the stories (in word and song) of an assortment of African-American women and their beloved Sunday–go-to-meetin’ hats.
“This is great opportunity for our students to see the different and beautiful ways the English language can be used. The kids have already read ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ in class, the play is offered this season at the IRT, and, of course there is the wonderfully produced and acted film with Gregory Peck,” Ewing says. “This grant will help our students learn that there are many ways to express our thoughts and ideas; many forms of communication – whether it’s day-to-day communication or artistic communication. We’re so thankful to the Target Field Trip Grant Program.”
Target Field Trip grants are designed to help bring learning to life for students. Ms. Ewing’s application was selected from more than 25,000 applicants from across the country. Criteria for the selection of grant recipients included: the description of the field trip and its objectives, the benefits to students, the tie-in to the school curriculum, the number of students who would be impacted and the proposed use of funds. Launched in September 2006, the Target Field Trip Grants Program has distributed 5,000 grants totaling $4 million in funds this year to education professionals to help teachers use “experiential learning” on field trips to enhance students’ classroom studies.
