FSA Student Elected as Secretary of State

Outstanding Fountain Square Academy (FSA) student Ashley Fisher has been elected as the Secretary of State for the Indiana YMCA Youth and Government program. She ran for this office against students from all over the state.

Ashley will represent the program in this position during the 2011-2012 school year and is responsible for overseeing South District voting, presiding over the senate, and compiling Youth and Government bills. Ashley explains that “Youth and Government has allowed me to meet new people and learn how to break out of my shell. I was a very shy person before, but now I’m more outgoing and willing to speak up and let my voice be heard. I’m a much more confident person now.”

Ashley is in the process of completing her junior year at FSA. She has attended FSA since it opened in 2005 and is looking forward to graduating from the school in May of 2012. She plans to attend Indiana University, Purdue University, or IUPUI and is still debating if she wants to go into Veterinarian Medicine like she’s planned for so long, or pursue her new love for the political system.

Indiana YMCA Youth and Government is a statewide youth educational program involving high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, in a "hands on" experience. The program uses a high quality experiential and educational simulation based upon Indiana's State government. The teen delegates write bills, prepare briefs, select governmental positions to role-play, attend a statewide training conference, and run for various elected offices. The program reaches its peak in Indianapolis at the State House with the convening of the three day Model Legislature & Court. There, "real" government moves over and the teen delegates "take over", using the historic halls, chambers, and offices of our State Capitol and Supreme Court. This opportunity is very comprehensive, and its impact on the youth participants is dramatic.
